M&S Home Insurance is the first UK insurance provider helping policyholders go green by helping householders who make a claim reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions.

This great move by M&S Home Insurance is being done through:

Sustainable reinstatement of kitchen appliances: a claim for a fridge freezer, refrigerator, washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, will be met by the offer of a replacement which is A rated for energy-efficiency. Such a replacement electrical kitchen appliance could save up to 140 KG of CO2 each year2.

- Sustainable total rebuild: if a property is damaged severely and a total rebuild is necessary, properties will be rebuilt in line with the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) 4. This involves the use of sustainable materials where possible, significantly improving the energy efficiency of the property and reducing their CO2 emissions.

The difference with this green replacement approach is that usually when insurers meet a claim on home insurance, they replace the lost or damaged possessions with their equivalent new items to put the policyholder back in the same position they were in before the claim. They do not take into account improved energy-efficiency or CO2 emissions that may be available on newer or slightly different models.

David Wells, M&S Head of Insurance, said: ‘Feedback from householders has told us that they want an insurance policy which helps reduce the environmental impact of their home in the event of a claim, and we are proud to be able to fulfil that wish in our policy.’

Mat Colmer, Head of Housing and Supply Chain for the Energy Saving Trust, said: ‘Rebuilding houses to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 is a demanding target covering a range of environmental criteria, so it’s encouraging that M&S Money is taking its role in making the UK’s housing stock more sustainable seriously.’
