Cheap car insurance: 5 tips
Getting a cheap car insurance policy is no mean feat these days, and with the RAC reporting that one in three consumers are paying too much for theirs, it is no wonder that some people seem overwhelmed when choosing the right cover.
The busier our lives get, the more unlikely we are to shop around for cheap car insurance, and we often just renew our existing policy because it is the easiest option. But you could be losing hundreds of pounds every year and with comparison sites now doing the hard work for you, there really is no reason for you to settle for second best.
So, with this in mind, here are five top tips to help you find the cheapest car insurance.
1. Do your research
Cheap car insurance doesn’t just fall in your lap one day; you have to go out there and find it. Don’t always assume that renewing your existing policy is the cheapest option and try and ignore the sales patter you will inevitably be subjected to. Use an independent comparison site to help you make the right decision and don’t be afraid to shop around it could save you a few quid!
2. Regular drivers only
A great way to lower your premiums is to have only people who drive the car regularly on the policy. It’s all well and good insuring your son or daughter so they can taxi themselves around when they’re back from university, but this will inflate the cost of your policy significantly. Remember, you can always add them onto your policy for a few days if needs be.
3. Protect your car
By making sure your car has an approved alarm system or immoboliser, you can save around five per cent on your policy every year. Even better, by fitting a tracking device, you will have more chance of recovering your car should it be stolen meaning you won’t have to pay a penny and your insurance provider will stay happy.
4. Use your garage
If you are serious about cheap car insurance, then isn’t it time you cleared out that garage of yours? We all tend to chuck any old rubbish in the garage; that exercise bike you used once, the miniature pool table it’s all in there but clearing it out for your car can drop the price of your policy significantly. Obviously, your car is safer locked up than on the street, so by parking it up in your garage you can save on your insurance.
5. Drive carefully
Probably the simplest way to lower your car insurance premiums in the long run is to just be careful on the road. It sounds obvious but the more years you go without having to claim, the further your car insurance costs will drop.
So there we have it, five easy tips to follow when choosing your cover and with a little bit of work, there is no reason why you can’t be enjoying your new, cheap car insurance policy tomorrow!
