How to get the most out of cheap car insurance companies
Nowadays, cheap car insurance companies aren’t that hard to find. Online comparison sites and the sheer choice of insurance providers means the market is pretty competitive, and a reasonable quote is only at the end of the phone or a click of your mouse.
But once you find some cheap car insurance companies, what can you do to make your premiums even cheaper? Here are some top tips to turn that cheap quote into an absolute bargain.
Change your car
Cheap car insurance companies will offer you rates depending on the type of vehicle you drive. They categorise your vehicle into one of 50 groups and the lower the group, the cheaper your premiums will be. They decide on what group to put your car in by considering a number of different factors. The more powerful the engine and the faster your car goes, the higher your premiums will be. Equally, the harder it is to repair and obtain certain parts, the more you’ll pay. If you’re buying a new car ask what group it falls into and if you currently own a vehicle that is expensive to insure, think about whether it would be financially prudent to trade it in for a cheaper model.
Increase your voluntary excess
Many people hear this and run a mile, but there really is no easier way to lower your insurance premiums. If you want cheap car insurance companies to offer you even cheaper cover, then agree to pay a larger voluntary excess. This of course means that if you get into an accident or need urgent repairs you will have to foot a larger amount of the bill, but stay out of trouble and drive safely and you will save money year on year. Also, the longer you go without bothering your provider, the bigger your no claims bonus will become thus saving you a significant amount of money in the long run.
Leave your car as it is
Modifying your vehicle is a bad idea in the eyes of car insurance providers, so keep it the way the manufacturer intended if you want to start saving money. Spoilers, fancy paint jobs and shiny alloys will not just look stupid on your 1994 Vauxhall Nova, but you will also pay an arm and a leg for the privilege.
Secure your car
A safe car is a cheap car, or at least that’s how your insurer will see it. Clear out the garage and stick your car in there; after all, that’s what it’s there for (contrary to popular belief, the garage is in fact not storage space for all your forgotten exercise equipment and general rubbish). You could also invest in some extra security systems such as a new alarm, an immobiliser or if money’s tight, a wheel lock to give both you and the insurer peace of mind.
You can find cheap car insurance companies in a heartbeat, but to truly get the most out of these, simply follow these simple tips and before long you’ll be enjoying cheap car insurance premiums.
