Experts note having sufficient home insurance coverage is a key to making it through a disaster.

Wildfires are among the calamities that can befall a homeowner, and the Insurance Information Institute is reminding consumers to be prepared, regardless of what state they live in. An area west of Boulder, Colorado, was recently plagued by this type of disaster, which usually affects California.

III media relations vice president Michael Barry said people should have enough home insurance to cover the cost of rebuilding their home and replacing their possessions.

“Too many policyholders are unfamiliar with what is in their policy until they have to file a claim, and by then it is too late to purchase the right amount of financial protection,” Barry said.

Although wildfires may lead to a home’s destruction, there are simpler ways for a blaze to start. For example, kitchens are often the source of this type of disaster, as people leave stoves unattended while cooking.

Along with keeping an eye on a stove, people should never use an oven to heat their apartment.
