According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive, more than three out of four adults in the U.S. agree that natural disasters are increasing.
Problem is, only a little more than half of respondents say that they are prepared for one of these natural disasters, including hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes.
The results of the survey show that 76 percent say that there have been more devastating natural disasters, while 31 percent say there have been “much more.”
But 56 percent of respondents claim to be prepared for a natural disaster, while 41 percent say that they are not prepared. The oldest age group – 66-years-old and up – came through with the highest mark of preparedness, with 67 percent claiming to be ready to handle a disaster, Harris said.
Checking up on homeowners insurance coverage is one way to be prepared if and when disaster strikes. The Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) recently urged homeowners to review home insurance coverage in light of the recent wave of storm activity across the U.S.
The results of the survey also show that levels of concern about different types of disasters vary by location.
According to Harris, 89 percent of Midwesterners worry about tornados, while 79 percent of the same are concerned about snow/ice storms. Snow/ice storms were also a concern for Easterners (77 percent), while 66 percent of Westerners worry about earthquakes.
Among Southerners, 66 percent show concern about tornadoes and 54 percent worry about hurricanes. Just 16 percent of respondents believe that the U.S. government is worst equipped to handle hurricanes. Compare this to 2006 – shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck – when 50 percent believed that the government was worst equipped to handle hurricanes.
Harris Interactive surveyed 2,163 adults between June 13 and June 20, 2011 for this study.
