October 4-8, 2010, is Drive Safely to Work Week!

This is a great time to review with your employees the importance of safely driving to work. Why? Because unsafe driving practices cause accidents. Accidents cause claims on health plans, time off of work, decreased productivity, and higher insurance premiums for your business. And that effect is amplified if your employees drive for you in the course of your business.

This year the focus is on distracted driving. In 2008, almost 6,000 people lost their lives in crashes that involved distracted driving. For your business, a zero-tolerance, enforced, distracted driving policy is a must as a risk management strategy.

Here is an eye-opening statistic for employers: 25% of respondents stated they engaged in distracted driving while driving for work and another 14% stated they did so equally between work and personal driving. In other words, 39% admit distracted driving while working. This according to Johns-Hopkins Medical Center. The Center has posted helpful information for employers including quick fact sheets.

Zurich Insurance will offer a webinar next week for business owners. “Attendees will learn about “vicarious liability,” which can place the liability for an accident caused by a distracted employee squarely on the employer. They’ll also receive guidance on creating distracted driving policies and information about how to communicate this important issue to employees. The webinar will take place on Thursday, October 7, at 3 p.m. EDT.”

Finally, the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS), who runs the campaign annually, is offering free Drive Safely to Work Week tool kits for employers.

Plenty of resources to make Drive Safely to Work Week successful for your organization.
